Restaurant Industry Rebound Gaining Momentum

In some good news for the restaurant industry, according to the survey, 70% of Americans dined out at least once per week over the last year, compared to 49% in a similar survey from the first quarter of 2010. Dining trends improved across all segments, with the best growth on the high and low ends, with convenience stores and fine dining outpacing other segments.

As their 10th anniversary draws near, VooDoo BBQ has successful growth in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and surrounding markets. On May 27th, Patrick Kerr and his family signed an agreement for the Greenville, SC area and purchased an additional 7 licenses for other markets. Those markets include Asheville, NC and several in South Carolina -- Anderson, Spartanburg, Charleston, Rock Hill, Columbia and another location in Greenville.

Perkins & Marie Callender's Inc. announced earlier today that it has entered into a restructuring support agreement (the "Restructuring Support Agreement") with holders of 100 percent of the Company's 14% Senior Secured Notes due 2013 and more than 80 percent of the Company's 10% Senior Notes due 2013 pursuant to which the Company has agreed to implement a financial and operational restructuring that will rationalize the Company's store footprint and result in a restructured balance sheet that will position the Company for long-term financial success.

Smashburger Announces Franchise Agreements for 63 New Restaurants

Smashburger today announced it has added five new franchise partners to its rapidly growing family of franchisees, totaling a combined commitment for 63 new franchise units across the country. These most recent franchise agreements bring Smashburger's total franchise pipeline to 463 locations, which are expected to open over the course of the next several years. These new commitments will also allow Smashburger to make its debut in four new markets, further expanding its growing national footprint.

Restaurant Spending May Drop Heading into Summer, Says Kurt Salmon

Consumer spending at restaurants is expected to drop as spring turns to summer, according to Kurt Salmon's Restaurant Spending Trajectory. The latest data shows intent to spend continuing a three-month slide after 18 months of steady growth.

The proprietary index, which tracks consumers' intent to spend on dining out, has been highly correlated with personal consumption expenditures at restaurants over the last five years.
